Aseica

OBJECTIVES

The Spanish Association for Cancer Research (ASEICA) was founded in 1.983 to facilitate a better relationship among Spanish professionals dedicated to all areas of cancer research. During the first years, our activities were aimed at establishing a solid ground and recognition at the national level. More recently, ASEICA has tried to initiate a period of international projection with its integration in the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) as well as by organizing a series of scientific activities in collaboration with several HispanoAmerican groups involved in cancer research.

Guided by the goal of fostering cancer research at the highest level possible, and to participate in the permanent training of the professionals dedicated to basic and clinical oncology, over the last years ASEICA has organized and promoted more than 70 courses and symposia covering both academic and practical activities. The areas covered by these activities include cell biology, molecular biology, occupational cancer, design of new anticancer durgs, epidemiology, haematology, immunology, invasion and metastasis, tumor markers, pathology, and radiobiology.

Through these courses, ASEICA has tried to contribute to facilitate the exchange of information and experience among the best national and European experts specializing in cancer research. It is a service that we are glad to provide to our associates with the aim of increasing the international integration of all the national oncologists and researchers. Special attention to the young generations of scientists as well as to the exchange of information between epidemiologists and basic and clinical oncologists is taken into consideration.

Our program for 2000 mantains this spirit of integration, mainly through organizing the IV National Congress of FESEO (Federation of Spanish Societies of Oncology) to be held in A Coruņa next October (3-6). In the organization of this meeting we have paid special attention to the integration of the different aspects of the oncological research currently performed in our country.

In addition, ASEICA has established a significant number of fellowships to facilitate the participation of young students in this meeting. On the other hand, ASEICA has also organized a series of more specific symposia to be held during this year and whose details are included in the Activities section of this web page.

Finally, we must indicate that we have recently opened in this page, a Forum of exchange of scientific information in Oncology. We hope that this forum will serve as a useful vehicle for communication among the different specialists in cancer research.
